“Are you a math person?” That’s a question Dana Miller-Cotto, Ph.D., an assistant professor in Kent State's Department of Psychological Sciences, asked at the beginning of her presentation at the recent Research & Innovation Forum, sponsored by the university's Science of Learning Education (SOLE) Center and the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs (RASP). She acknowledged that some people feel very strongly about math, and some may even feel anxiety about it. Miller-Cotto also asked how people feel about being “a math person” – or not. She asked forum attendee...

Blog Banner Ruth Morara

My name is Ruth Morara and I am in the class of 2026. My major is Conservation Biology. I honestly feel more like Kent chose me than the other way around! I am Kenyan-American but my family lives in Kenya, and so have I for the past 12 years. The exchange rate between our currencies made my dream of studying in the US look impossible. However, several staff at Kent State reached out and connected me to resources which could help me bypass this financial obstacle. Within a couple of weeks, I was met with a plethora of financial aid; far higher than any offered by the other universities tha...

East Palestine chemical cloud

On the night of Feb. 3, about 50 cars of a freight train operated by Norfolk Southern Railway derailed in a fiery crash on the outskirts of East Palestine, a tiny village in northeastern Ohio, nestled near the state line with Pennsylvania. Ten of the derailed cars were transporting hazardous materials, five of which contained vinyl chloride, a highly volatile colorless gas produced for commercial uses.   Since then, there have been many reports about the evacuation of nearby residents, the cleaning and environmental testing that are still underway and political coverage of governmental...

Senior history major Emma Kelly was among the Kent State students who visited Jackson State University for the alternative winter break trip.

Before history major Emma Kelly traveled to Jackson State University for an alternative winter break trip recently, she had been well educated about the police shootings that took place on the Mississippi campus on May 15, 1970, just days after the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded nine at Kent State.   Kelly, a senior history major, had taken History of Civil Rights and Black Power Movement courses in which she learned in depth about the Gibbs-Green tragedy at Ja...

Jeffrey Huston Banner

Peering into a classroom taught by Jeffery Huston, Ph.D., professor of health sciences, may surprise the casual observer. Whether it’s tennis balls flying around the room, students scrambling with dry-erase markers, or sometimes, unusual use for tables, the students are engaged. An ideal classroom for Huston balances on the edge of chaos. After more than 20 years of teaching, Huston said his focus in the classroom is to teach his students to lead a life of purpose and distinction. And he exercises the healthy minds of his students with interactive in-class activities. Huston said it’...
