When Kent State alumnus Carlton “CeeJay” Scott Jr., ’23, returned from his 2023 Spring Semester abroad as an exchange student in Cairo, he brought with him a transformed vision for his future as a filmmaker. He had originally planned to make movies in the U.S. - maybe locally, or New York or California - but after being immersed in Egyptian culture for four months, CeeJay knew he wanted to see more of the world and have similar experiences. Over the years, LaunchNET Kent State has become synonymous with entrepreneurship within the university community. The organization helps students, faculty and staff, and alumni transform ideas into viable businesses, innovative collaborations and successful projects. Musicians tune their instruments and “warm up” before the performance. But what if the name you were given doesn’t feel like “you?” This is the case for some transgender or gender-diverse people and those whose chosen name does not match their legal or birth name.
