Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel Encourages Grads to Find their Passion

Commencement ceremonies were held May 9 for the Kent State Columbiana County campuses during which degrees were awarded to graduates from the East Liverpool and Salem campuses.

Presiding over the ceremonies were Denise A. Seachrist, Ph.D., dean of the Salem Campus, and Bradley Bielski, Ph.D., dean of the East Liverpool Campus.

The keynote speaker was Ohio Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel, who represents the 79th House District, which encompasses the majority of Columbiana County. She is a lifelong resident of Columbiana County, graduated from Crestview High School and lives in Columbiana with her husband and two daughters.

In her address to the graduates, Blasdel acknowledged the strong pull this area has on its residents through local traditions, heritage and communities.

“Here, in the familiar embrace of Columbiana County, we celebrate a significant milestone – the finale of your academic journey and the exciting dawn of your next chapter,” she began her address.

“You have just spent years honing your skills and expanding your knowledge right here in the great state of Ohio,” Blasdell continued. “You’ve experienced the changing seasons, the friendly faces in our small-town communities, and the unique rhythm of life in the Buckeye State. Many of you are lifelong residents, in fact, and as you contemplate your future, I want to suggest that the very ground beneath our feet offers fertile soil for your passions to take root and flourish.”

While she reminded graduates that opportunities abound for them close to home, she encouraged them to extend their vision to all corners of the state.

“Graduates, your time here has laid a strong foundation. You’ve learned. You’ve grown. And you’ve become part of this Columbiana County community, and an essential part of the Ohio family. As you look towards the future, consider the immense potential that lies within the Buckeye State,” Blasdell said.

“Your passion doesn’t need a passport to flourish. Your passion awaits you, right here, in Ohio. The place where your dreams can take flight and where your future can blossom,” she continued. “Let the spirit of innovation and community that thrives in our state fuel your own journey ahead.”

Blasdel said that she describes passion as “that vibrant, internal force that ignites your soul and propels you towards something with unwavering enthusiasm and deep commitment.” For her, public service became her true passion.

“Ultimately, my passion has led me to earn the trust of the voters of my House District and has allowed me the immense honor of representing more than 125,000 constituents in our capital city. I don’t know what my future holds when this career comes to an end, but I can tell you one thing: it’s my passion that drives me to be the best version of myself, for you and all Ohioans.

“The thing about life is, it’s like a building block … where each experience helps build you stronger and stronger,” she continued. “Each setback, each encounter, each milestone brings you closer and closer to your ultimate goal. I truly hope that one of your goals today is to find that passion and work toward achieving it for your long-term happiness and for the overall good of humanity.”

Blasdel asked graduates, when considering how to pursue their individual passions, to set their sights on the opportunities within Ohio’s borders.

“Consider the growing and diverse industries that call Ohio home. From advanced manufacturing and technology to healthcare and agriculture, opportunities surround us all. Your education here at has equipped you with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to these sectors, allowing you to align your career with your passions without having to chase distant horizons.

“Don’t underestimate the rich cultural landscape and history that Ohio offers,” she continued. “Our cities, towns and villages are home to museums, historical markers, galleries, theatres, music venues and vibrant arts communities. Whatever your creative passion may be, you’ll find avenues to expression and connection right here. Participate in community programs or workshops. You might discover a hidden passion for creative expression.

“Let’s not forget the balance and affordability that Ohio provides,” Blasdel noted. “The lower cost of living here can ease the financial pressures, allowing you more freedom to invest your time and energy into your dreams without the constant strain of exorbitant expenses. This stability can be a powerful catalyst for pursuing your true calling.”

Blasdel further noted how Ohio’s blend of urban and rural environments can serve as sources of inspiration. “Whether your passion thrives in the energy of a city or the calmness of a rural landscape, you can find your niche here in the Midwest,” she said. “Our state offers diverse landscapes, from the shores of Lake Erie to the Appalachian foothills. Spending time in nature – hiking, kayaking or exploring our magnificent state parks – can be a source of inspiration and might ignite a passion for conservation or outdoor recreation.”

In closing, Blasdel congratulated the graduates and offered: “…Now, go out there and make your next steps extraordinary and may you always carry a piece of the Heartland with you.”
